The Advantages of New Window Glass

What To Do When Your Car Windows Break

Car windows are built to be quite strong, but that does not mean that they are invincible. Whether it was a flying piece of gravel or driving over some very bumpy road, auto glass can break for a variety of reasons, but that should not be your focus after the fact. What should be your focus, is what you need to do now to ensure you get back on the road as quickly as possible. Here are a few steps you should follow after your car windows break so that you cause as little damage as possible to your car.

Do Not Drive It

Even if the glass that has broken isn't the main windshield, you should still not drive a car with a broken window. There are a few reasons for that, including the fact that shards of glass could still be blown around by the unfiltered wind rushing in. It would also almost certainly violate your insurance, which would mean if any further damage should happen you could be completely liable. You can also get a lot of debris coming into your exposed window, which would be totally beyond your control and could severely distract you and cause you to crash.

Clean And Cover The Area

If the glass has shattered, then you should carefully clean up the pieces by hand or with a special, hand-held vacuum. Try to use thick gloves if possible, and be very methodical so pieces of glass do not turn up in your car years later. Do not try to break off more of the broken window. Once you have done that, use some cardboard or even just some plastic and tape this material cover over the exposed gap. This does not make it safe to drive, it is purely there to try and keep the elements out, and if you can you should park under cover.
